Chimney Crown Repair in New Britain, CT
The crown is the slab at the very top that throws rain clear of the flue. On most older Connecticut chimneys it is a thin mortar wash that cracked years ago, and it is where the water is getting in.

Leave the building and call from outside — that is an emergency services call, not a service call. A blocked or failed flue is one of the ways carbon monoxide reaches a living space, and headaches that clear when you leave the house point the same way. If you have had a chimney fire — a roaring sound, dense smoke, or debris on the roof — do not light another fire until the flue has been inspected.

Chimney Crown Repair in New Britain
Two things shape chimney work in New Britain: the age of the building stock, and what the weather does to masonry that has been standing in it for decades. The chimney is rarely the thing that changed — what changed is usually what vents into it.
About 32% of homes in New Britain were built before 1940 — old enough to have been built with radiators and no ductwork at all; 68% of them heat with natural gas, so oversized flues left behind by an earlier fuel are the recurring finding here. (US Census ACS 2022)
The crown is rarely the only thing
A cracked crown has usually been admitting water for years before anyone notices, and by then the water has been somewhere. Recasting the crown without checking the top few courses of brick underneath is how a chimney gets repaired twice.
Cap at the same time
The crown and the cap are both top-of-chimney work and the access is the same. Fitting a cap while the crown is being done costs far less than a second visit, and an uncapped flue undermines the crown work anyway.
Check the top courses
Where the crown has failed, the brick immediately below it has usually taken water for as long. Those courses often need rebuilding as part of the same job, and a quote that does not mention them is worth questioning.
Why the wash cracks and a proper crown does not
What most houses have is a mortar wash: mortar troweled over the top of the brick, sloped roughly, finishing flush with the outside edge. It has no reinforcement, no expansion joint around the flue tile, and no overhang. Mortar and clay flue tile expand at different rates, so the wash cracks around the tile within a decade, and with no overhang the water that gets through runs straight down the face of the brick.
A crown built properly is a cast slab, two inches or more thick at its thinnest, reinforced, sloped away from the flue, with a bond break or expansion joint where it meets the tile, and projecting past the brick with a drip edge cut underneath so water falls clear.
When a coating is enough
Hairline cracking in a crown that is otherwise sound and correctly shaped can be sealed with a flexible crown coating, which bridges movement in a way mortar cannot. It buys years, it is inexpensive, and it is a reasonable answer on a crown that is structurally fine.
When it has to be recast
Cracks you can get a coin into, missing sections, a wash with no overhang at all, or a crown that has broken up around the flue tile. Coating over that seals water in rather than out.

Chimney Crown Repair in New Britain — FAQs
Is chimney waterproofing worth doing?
On sound, porous, exposed masonry it genuinely slows the water absorption that destroys brick. On masonry that has already started to flake it is worse than doing nothing, because it traps water behind the damaged face. And it has to be a breathable repellent rather than a film-forming sealant — the film is what causes the damage people then blame on waterproofing.
What qualifications should a New Britain chimney company have?
Ask for three things and check them: current liability insurance, CSIA certification from the Chimney Safety Institute of America, and whatever license or registration your state requires for the work in question. Ask to see the documents rather than taking the logo on the van as proof. For anything involving gas appliance venting, ask separately who is pulling the permit.
Can you work on a rental or multi-family property in New Britain?
Yes. Ask for the findings in writing so a landlord or managing agent can act on them. In multi-family buildings the usual complication is the stack itself — one chimney frequently carries flues for several units with different owners, so establishing whose flue is whose comes before anyone quotes work.
My New Britain house is pre-war — what does that change?
About 32% of housing in New Britain predates 1940, and chimneys of that age behave differently. Many were built before flue tile was standard, so the flue is brick and mortar joints with no lining at all. Most have also changed fuel at least once without being resized. And the masonry itself is softer than anything made now, which means modern hard mortar does more harm than good on it. A camera survey is the only way to know which of those apply.
I heat with oil in New Britain — what does that mean for the flue?
Around 12% of homes here heat with oil, and oil soot is acidic. It attacks flue tile and the mortar between tiles from the inside, where a look from the roof will not find it. That is the case for a camera survey rather than a visual inspection. It also matters if you ever convert to gas: the flue will then be far too large for the new appliance and will need relining.
Nothing vents into our chimney any more. Does it still matter?
Less urgently, but yes. An uncapped disused flue collects rain, leaves and nesting for years with nobody noticing, and water sitting inside it damages the structure from within. If the chimney is genuinely finished with, removing it above the roofline and roofing over is a legitimate option. If anything at all still vents into it — a water heater in particular — then it matters as much as it ever did.
Can I just seal it myself?
A flexible crown coating on a sound crown is within reach of a careful homeowner who is safe on a roof. Cast repairs and anything structural are not, and the risk of working at that height is the main argument against.
How long does a properly cast crown last?
Decades, where it is correctly shaped with an overhang and an expansion joint. The failures that come back early are almost always the ones with no overhang, or cast too thin.
