What a chase cover is and why the cheap ones fail
Where a chimney is a framed and clad chase rather than masonry, the top is closed by a sheet-metal cover with a collar around the flue pipe. Builders frequently fit a flat galvanized cover, because it is the least expensive option available.
Flat is the problem. Water sits in the middle instead of running off, and standing water on galvanized steel corrodes it from the top down. Once it perforates, water goes straight into the chase — onto the framing, onto the insulation, and down the inside of the structure — while the visible symptom is only the rust staining outside.
Why stainless with a cross-break
A cross-break is a shallow ridge pressed into the sheet so the surface is not flat and water is forced to the edges. Combined with stainless rather than galvanized, that removes both failure mechanisms at once. It costs more than the builder's cover and it is the last one the chimney needs.
The collar and the storm seal
The cover has to seal around the flue pipe where it passes through. A collar with a proper storm seal does that; a bead of silicone does not, and it is where a lot of otherwise decent covers leak.
What the streaking is telling you
Rust runoff is the late symptom. By the time it is visible on the siding, the cover has been holding water for years and has probably already perforated. What matters is what has been happening inside the chase in the meantime.
Check the chase interior
Water entering a framed chase wets framing and insulation and has nowhere to dry. Before a new cover goes on, the inside is worth looking at, because replacing the lid over rotted framing solves the wrong half of the problem.
On the shoreline, it happens faster
Salt air accelerates the corrosion considerably. Along the Sound and the southeastern shoreline a galvanized cover can be failing in a handful of years, which is why stainless is effectively the only sensible specification near the water.

Is the rust coming from my chimney or my roof?
On a sided chase, almost always the chase cover. Masonry chimneys stain differently — efflorescence is white, not orange. Orange streaking on siding or stucco below a chase is the cover.
Can a chase cover be patched?
Temporarily. Once it has perforated it is thin everywhere, and a patch simply moves where the next hole appears. Replacement is the repair.
Are chase covers made to measure?
Yes — chases vary in size and in how many flues pass through, so covers are fabricated to the measurements. That is also why a quote requires someone to get on the roof first.
Does the cap go on the cover?
They are separate. The cover closes the top of the chase; the cap sits over the flue opening itself with mesh. Both are usually replaced together because the access is the same visit.
How long should a stainless cover last?
Decades, including near salt water. A galvanized cover in coastal Connecticut may not manage five years.
